VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY BAD PRESIDENT
Andrew Johnson rejected Republican proposals to pursue a robust Reconstruction that would have given land and livestock (40 acres + mule) to former slaves. He also opposed suffrage for African American men.
In 1866, Johnson wrote: “This is a country for white men, and by God, as long as I am President, it shall be a government for white men.”
Had the original Republican plans for Reconstruction been enacted and enforced, and the former slaves been integrated into the economy in a meaningful way, it is likely that the Jim Crow era would not have occurred and America’s purported dream of equality and racial harmony might be closer to reality today.
